Pre-Studies Language Training & Scholarships

In order to complete your studies successfully, you need to have good German language skills (C1). You need to prove your German skills with a language proficiency test. A list of tests which are recognized by TU Dortmund University can be found on this website.

Exceptions to this rule are degree programs taught in English which require a respective certificate that has to be handed in.


Language Training "NRWege ins Studium"

As of January 2017, TU Dortmund University provides funds for German language courses offered by cooperating language schools which prepare refugees for their future studies. These language courses are funded by the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to the language training, there is a mandatory program that is designed to deepen your language skills and helps your integration on campus. You can only apply online for this program.

The application periods for 2020 are as follows:

15 to 30 June 2020

15 to 31 August 2020

Scholarships for students with refugee background

Are you about to take up studies at TU Dortmund University and worry about financing it? Or did you start your studies already and now realize that financial support is necessary?

Particularly talented students with a refugee background have the possibility to apply for a scholarship during the initial phase of their studies at TU Dortmund or a study scholarship from the second semester onwards. These scholarships are part of a project framework of the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) and financed by funds from the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW).

These are the application periods for the above-mentioned scholarships for the initial phase of studies or the study scholarships in the year 2020:

Scholarships for the initial phase of studies

If you are extraordinarily motivated, can prove a very good performance in your preliminary language courses and have a refugee background, you can apply for a scholarship supporting the initial phase of your studies, i.e. the first two program semesters.

 

How do I apply for a scholarship for the initial phase of studies?

The application for this scholarship requires a fully completed application form which you can find here.

 

The following documents have to be handed in for the application:

  • fully completed and signed application form
  • current enrollment confirmation of TU Dortmund University, respectively confirmation of receipt of study application, respectively acknowledgement of study place (e.g. printout of confirmation email)
  • copy of residence permit (verification of refugee background)
  • certificates from a language school or institute
  • officially recognized German language certificate (e.g. the German language examination for university admission, DSH)
  • letter of motivation

If available:

  • proof of income (employment contract, proof of income of the last three months)
  • proof of the receipt of BAföG, other scholarships or state benefits
  • proof of previous handling of living expenses as well as savings
  • proof of/reference letter on social or community commitment

Please hand in your application and all necessary documents in due time, either personally during the office hours of the Refugee Counseling and Integration Office or by mail to:

Study scholarships

If you are enrolled at TU Dortmund University, motivated, can provide good marks and have a refugee background, you can apply for a study scholarship from the second program semester onwards. This scholarship grants financial support between one and three years.


How do I apply for a study scholarship?

The application for this scholarship requires a fully completed application form which you can find here.

 

The following documents have to be handed in for the application:

  • fully completed and signed application form
  • current enrollment certificate of TU Dortmund University
  • proof of previous study achievements (current transcript of records)
  • officially recognized German language certificate (e.g. the German language examination for university admission, DSH)
  • letter of motivation
  • a supporting assessment from a lecturer/university teacher
  • copy of residence permit (verification of refugee background)

If available:

  • proof of income (employment contract, proof of income of the last three months)
  • proof of the receipt of BAföG, other scholarships or
  • proof of previous handling of living expenses as well as savings
  • proof of/reference letter on social or community commitment
