Accommodation

The International Office offers a service of booking a room in a student dormitory (on or off campus) for exchange students.

Since there is only a limited number of dorm rooms that the International Office can book at the Housing Office (Studierendenwerk Dortmund), you can only apply by filling in the online application and upload the accommodation request. Please keep in mind that the reservation is binding!

Please do not send any applications to the Housing Office! You can reserve a dorm room only through the International Office!

You may change or cancel the reservation up to 2 months before your arrival. After that, full payment of the rent will be charged. The Studierendenwerk Dortmund will charge the deposit against the loss of rent.

Application deadline

May 15 (for winter semester)

and

November 15 (for summer semester)

Rent

For all dorm rooms, the rent will be up to 450,- € per month. The deposit is 500,- € and needs to be paid at the beginning of your stay either with credit or debit card. It cannot be paid in cash!

General information

Unfortunately, we are only able to notify you shortly before your arrival in which dorm you have been placed. Changes can be made until then.

In case that there are more exchange students in one semester than rooms on campus, the International Office will find private student dorms in Dortmund for you off campus.

Information on dorms of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund

The rooms:

In every dorm there are only single-bed rooms. These can be in flat shares (co-ops) with at least two people or single apartments.

Flat share:

You have to share the bathroom and the kitchen with your fellow lodger. All co-ops are same sex co-ops.

Single Apartment:

There are two different options. Either you have your own kitchen or the kitchen is in the hall and you have to share with the other students in the dorm (mostly there is one kitchen for each hall). But every single apartment has a bath room and you do not have to share with others.

Internet:

All rooms in the dorms have the facilities to use your computer and to get online; you just have to bring your own computer. The costs are included in the rent.

More information can be found on the webpage of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund.

A helpful dictionary

The Deutsches Studierendenwerk published an illustrated dictionary in GER-ENG-CHIN dealing with the topic “living at a student dorm” which might prove to be useful during your stay.
