Accommodation

The International Office offers to request accommodation in a student dormitory (on or off campus) for exchange students.

Since there is only a limited number of dorm rooms the International Office can request at Student Housing Services (Studierendenwerk Dortmund/ Wohnen), you can only request a room by filling in the online application form and upload the accommodation request there. Please keep in mind that the request is binding! You will have to pay a deposit (500 EUR) before your arrival to the Studierendenwerk Dortmund so that the room can be reserved for you. You will receive more information concerning the transfer with the Welcome E-Mail.

Not every dorm is located on campus. There are some dorms that are located about 20 - 30 minutes off campus.

Please do not send any applications to Student Housing Services! You can request a dorm room only through the International Office!

You may change or cancel the request up to 2 months before your arrival. After that full payment of the rent will be charged. The Studierendenwerk Dortmund will charge the deposit against the loss of rent.

Important: You can probably only get a room for one semester with this service. Meaning that when you start studying in the winter semester and you are planning to stay for the summer semester as well, you will likely have to organize accommodation for the summer semester on your own. Of course, you will have support by the Wohnraumberatung of the International Office.

You will find all information on the"Wohnraumberatung" here.

Application deadline

May 15 (for winter semester)

November 15 (for summer semester)

Up to this date we will assist finding housing accommodations for your. After the deadline has passed it is possible to contact the ERASMUS-Incomings Coordinator at the International Office to gain admittance into the university. However, she cannot guarantee you assistance with housing accommodations.

Rent

For every dorm room, the rent will be up to 430,- EUR per month.

General information

Unfortunately, we are only able to inform you shortly before your arrival in which dorm you have been placed. Changes can be made until then.

In case that there are more exchange students in one semester than rooms on campus, the International Office will find private student dorms in Dortmund for you. This only applies for students who applied before the deadline AND transferred the deposit.

Information on dorms of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund

The rooms:

In every dorm there are only single-bed rooms. These can be in flat shares (co-ops) with at least two people or single apartments.

Flat share:

You have to share the bathroom and the kitchen with your fellow lodger. All co-ops are same sex co-ops.

Single Apartment:

There are two different options. Either you have your own kitchen or the kitchen is in the hall and you have to share with the other students in the dorm (mostly there is one kitchen for each hall). But every single apartment has a bath room and you do not have to share with others.

Internet:

All rooms in the dorms have the facilities to use your computer and to get online; you just have to bring your own computer.

More information can be found on the webpage of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund.

A helpful dictionary

The Deutsches Studierendenwerk published an illustrated dictionary in GER-ENG-CHIN dealing with the topic “living at a student dorm” which might prove to be useful during your stay.
