Tips for online application


Please make sure to follow steps 1 through 9 and to upload only correct and complete data. Further, you need to upload scans of all transcripts of records and degrees.

It is possible to save your online application on your computer and to continue working on it at a different time. For this purpose, please use the “save draft” or “retrieved saved draft” feature.

If you encounter problems or receive an error notice, please contact our team via email. If possible, try to be as precise as possible when reporting the problem – screenshots might be helpful! We will try to solve the problem as soon as possible and respond to you via email.


Step 1:

Please fill out the complete form with information regarding your person, origin and nationality. Here, all boxes are mandatory!

Step 2:

Please provide a mailing address in Germany (if possible) as well as your email address and telephone number. In case of important inquiries, we will most likely contact you via email. Once you have submitted a mailing address, you will not be able to change it in the application process. You will get an reply by email.

Step 3:

Before choosing your study program, please review the following criteria:

  • For placement in a higher semester, you need to have transcripts of records from previous studies and the credits that were accepted ahead of time by the corresponding department. Please check the information about the application process.

  • All graduate programs (Master programs) are consecutive.

  • If you are planning to pursue a teaching degree, you need to indicate the type of school (e.g. elementary school) and the selected subjects (e.g. English). For further information on a teaching degree at TU Dortmund University, please contact the DoKoLL.

  • All applications for the study programs

are carried out by the concerning faculties. For further information, please visit the faculty’s website.

Step 4:

Here, you need to insert information concerning your school degree (the upload of the scanned documents will be explained in step 8). In case you need to add multiple degrees, please use the "Add secondary scholl education” feature. Please note: It is not necessary to give us information concerning your elementary education.

Step 5:

Here, you need to insert information concerning your university degree(s) (the upload of the scanned documents will be explained in step 8). In case you need to add multiple degrees, please use the "Add University” feature.

Step 6:

It is necessary for us to receive information concerning your language skills because some study programs require a DSH or an equivalent exam. Unfortunately, all applications (only for these restricted study programs) that are missing the required language standards cannot be processed. Further, some study programs require certain German or English tests. You can find more Information here.

Step 7:

If you have studied at TU Dortmund University or any other German university before, you have to give us detailed information here. In case you have not studied in Germany before, please move on to step 8.

Step 8:

Now, it is time to upload your scanned documents by using the “Choose” feature. Make sure to include all necessary documents which you have listed in step 4, 5, and/or 6.

Please note the following instructions:

  • Try to upload the documents in compiled PDF-files. For example: scan your secondary school degree and the corresponding transcripts of records (both in your native language and a translated version in German or English), compile them in ONE file and choose the right name for this file.

  • If you have received an admission letter from TU Dortmund University before, please upload it as well.

  • If you have passed a DSH-exam or any other language proficiency test, please upload it here. You only need to upload the results of the highest level in the concerning language (e.g. if you have passed a DSH-exam, you do not need to upload B1 or B2 certificates)

  • The APS-certificate (for applicants from China, Mongolia, Vietnam) needs to be uploaded as well.

Please note: It is not possible to send missing documents by mail. In case of an incomplete application, you need to fill out a new (and then complete) online application.

Step 9:

Please read the text carefully. Here, you will confirm that all information in this online application is correct and complete.

If you have missed to fill out mandatory boxes, the system will warn you. You can only complete the application after filling out all mandatory boxes.
