Cultural Vistas - Experience for the Global Workplace

Cultural Vistas, a New York based International Exchange organization, is designated by the U.S. Department of State as a sponsor of international students and young professionals for the J-1 visa internship/traineeship programs in the U.S. The Cultural Vistas Placement USA Program works in cooperation with universities and government organizations to offer international students and recent graduates career-focused internship placements at established organizations across the United States.

Cultural Vistas can secure paid or unpaid internship placements across a variety of professional industries and fields, ranging from leading hospitality and high-tech companies to law firms, nonprofit and government organizations.

Duration

Internship placements can last from three weeks up to 12 months for students and up to 18 months for recent graduates.

Eligibility

Cultural Vistas is designated by the U.S. Department of State as a J-1 visa sponsor in five categories: Intern, Trainee, Teach, WEST, and Summer Work and Travel. Candidates for Cultural Vistas' Placement USA program must meet the eligibility requirements of the J-1 Intern visa.

 

J-1 Intern Eligibility Requirements

  • Non-U.S. citizen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Proficiency in English
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in a post-secondary academic institution outside the United States and have completed at least one semester
    OR
    has graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to the internship's start date

Program Fees

As a non-profit organization, Cultural Vistas is dedicated to remaining an affordable option for international students looking to enhance their careers while living abroad. Program and administration fees are based on the nature of placement and program length.

Placement

Accepted candidates for the placement program will be billed at a rate of $750.

 

J-1 Program Costs

The standard J-1 program costs are charged in addition to the aforementioned placement fee. These costs include J-1 visa program administration and issuance of Form DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility for the J-1 visa.

  • 0-3 months: $750
  • 3-6 months: $950
  • 6-12 months: $1,250

*Students are defined as currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program outside the United

Additional Fees

  • Insurance: approx. $68/month
    All participants are required to have insurance by the U.S. Department of State. Cultural Vistas takes care of this compliance by enrolling all participants in our insurance. The fee is $46 per month and provides coverage from program start date to end date. Additional coverage may be purchased for the 30 day grace period before and after the program.
  • SEVIS Fee: $180
    The SEVIS I-901 fee is a federally mandated fee that supports SEVIS, an automated system that tracks exchange visitors activity in the United States. Cultural Vistas pays the fee on behalf of the exchange visitor and issues a copy of the receipt.

Please note that all J-1 visa applicants must pay a fee of $140 to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where they interview for the visa. Canadian citizens are exempt from scheduling an interview and paying this fee.

Refund Policy

If a participant’s J-1 visa application is rejected at a U.S. Consulate, the individual will receive a full refund of the placement fee and a 50% refund of the administration costs.

If a participant receives an offer from a U.S. host company, but does not accept the placement, the placement fee will not be refunded.

If a participant accepts the placement offer, but withdraws their application prior to being issued the Form DS-2019, the individual will receive a 50% refund of the administration fee. In this event, the placement fee will not be refunded.

Application Deadline

Students, recent graduates and young professionals should apply for placement services by March 1 for a U.S. internship start date of October 1 or later.

Applicants who miss the March 1 deadline, or those who seek to gain practical training experience in the United States at a later time, should apply by October 1 in order to receive a placement for a U.S. internship beginning April 1 or later.

The application dates for students applying through our German partner ZAV are as follows:

  • March 1 to April 30 for November 1 internship start dates or later
  • September 1 - October 31 for May 1 internship start dates or later
