TU Dortmund University awards honorary doctorate to Donald Tusk

On 16 December 2018, TU Dortmund will confer an honorary doctorate on the President of the European Council, H.E. Dr h.c. Donald Tusk, in recognition of his services to European politics and his contribution to the debate on European values. The academic title is granted on the initiative of the Faculty of Human Sciences and Theology in the field of political science.

As the laudations emphasize, Donald Tusk combines active political engagement with value-based reflection; his biography thus unites political practice and scientific insight. He campaigns for Europe as a community of values at the highest political level and has committed himself to values, such as freedom, that are core to the advancement of science. His own publications focus on Europe with his historical analyses clearly relating to the political history of ideas. His political activity, moreover, sustainably influences the European debate in political science on issues such as the process of European integration.

Donald Tusk’s CV

Donald Tusk has been President of the European Council since 2014. He was born in GdaƄsk, Poland, in 1957 and studied history at the University of Gdánsk from 1976. In the 1980s, he was a member of Poland’s Solidarity movement, initially founding a student organisation, later in the underground movement. During this period, he was involved, inter alia, in producing an illegal monthly journal promoting liberal democracy and economic liberalism. With the dawn of the Third Polish Republic in 1989, he helped to shape the development of the free party system. In 2007, he became Prime Minister of Poland, the first incumbent to be re-elected in 2011. Three years later, he assumed the presidency of the European Council. He has already received several important honours for his political commitment to reinforcing the community of values in Europe, such as The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen (2010) and an honorary doctorate from Hungary’s oldest university, Pécs (2017).

TU Dortmund University’s commitment to European and universal values

By conferring an honorary doctorate on Donald Tusk in its anniversary year, TU Dortmund University is once again underscoring its own commitment to European values. The anniversary exhibition at the Dortmunder U, which opened in the summer, places the still-young university in the more than 900-year tradition of European universities that rests on the common values of universitas, freedom, truth and diversity.
