Cutting-edge research at TU Dortmund University

In the last months, we were thrilled to announce a number of success stories in different research areas.

TU Dortmund University is renowned for its cutting-edge research. This was recently confirmed by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft): Both the Collaborative Research Centre 876 (Sonderforschungsbereich 876) and the Transregio 160 were awarded positive rankings and will be funded for another four years. Thereby, TU Dortmund University as head institution continues its excellent research programs in computer science and physics.

We can also report good news for the Ruhr Region as an important scientific location: On the initiative of Ruhr-University Bochum and TU Dortmund University, the Max Planck Society decided to start a new Institute for cyber security and privacy in Bochum. TU Dortmund University’s competencies in artificial intelligence and Big Data will complement the IT security research area. Our strong Faculty for Computer Science coordinates one of four national competence centers for machine learning. Furthermore, there is the Dortmund Data Science Center where the Faculties of Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics bundle their expertise in the field of data science.

Another good news is that the German Research Foundation will fund the excellence cluster “Ruhr Explores Solvation – RESOLV” as of 2019 for the next seven years. The joint cluster of TU Dortmund University and the Ruhr-University Bochum has thus asserted itself in the national excellence strategy. This success proves that the approximately 200 scientists of chemistry, biology, and physics involved in the cluster conduct research on the highest level. In the future the cooperation will continue to focus on exciting and groundbreaking insights in the role of solvents in chemical reactions.
